Kotlin in the Age of AI: Your Voice Matters – Join the Survey
Artificial intelligence is reshaping how developers write, review, and maintain code. JetBrains wants to ensure that Kotlin evolves with these changes, and your firsthand experiences are key. This Q&A explains our new community survey on AI-assisted development with Kotlin—what we’re asking, why it matters, and how you can participate and win rewards.
Why is JetBrains launching a survey on Kotlin and AI?
AI tools are rapidly evolving, offering code completion, intelligent chat assistants, autonomous coding agents, and more. While these innovations bring incredible possibilities, their effectiveness with Kotlin—a language known for its conciseness and Java interoperability—isn’t fully understood. JetBrains recognizes this gap and wants to gather real-world data directly from developers. The survey aims to capture current usage patterns, identify friction points, and uncover unmet needs. By understanding how the community interacts with AI in Kotlin projects, we can guide future improvements to both Kotlin itself and the AI tools that support it. Your input will help shape features, documentation, and integrations that make Kotlin development even more productive and enjoyable in the AI era.

What are the main topics covered in the survey?
The survey focuses on AI-assisted development with Kotlin. It asks about your current use of AI tools—such as code completion, chat assistants, and autonomous agents—and how they fit into your workflow. Key areas include: which tools you use, how well they understand Kotlin idioms and APIs, where you encounter frustrations or limitations, and what improvements you would like to see. The survey also explores your expectations for future AI capabilities in Kotlin, like better refactoring suggestions or context-aware code generation. Every question is designed to provide actionable insights, from the most common pain points to the features that would have the greatest impact on your daily productivity.
How will the survey results influence Kotlin’s future?
Your responses will directly inform JetBrains’ priorities for Kotlin’s ecosystem in the age of AI. For instance, if many developers report that AI assistants struggle with Kotlin coroutines or multiplatform code, we can focus on improving those areas. The aggregated data will also guide collaborations with AI tool providers, ensuring Kotlin gets first-class support in popular assistants. Additionally, the feedback will influence Kotlin’s own roadmap—from language features that simplify AI integration to improved documentation tailored for AI-assisted workflows. Ultimately, the goal is to make Kotlin not just compatible with modern AI tools, but a language where AI amplifies developer productivity naturally and seamlessly.
Who is the survey for?
This survey is open to all Kotlin developers, regardless of their experience level or the type of projects they work on. Whether you are a backend developer using Ktor, an Android developer leveraging Jetpack Compose, or a data scientist exploring Kotlin for scripting, your perspective matters. Even if you don’t currently use AI tools, your feedback on barriers to adoption or desired features is valuable. The survey is short—designed to take only a few minutes—so that everyone can contribute without disrupting their day. By participating, you become part of the Kotlin community’s collective effort to shape how AI assists developers in the years ahead.

What incentives can participants receive?
As a thank-you for sharing your insights, you can choose one of two prizes after completing the survey: a USD 50 Amazon Gift Card or a six-month subscription to the JetBrains All Products Pack. The All Products Pack includes access to IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate, ReSharper Ultimate, and all other JetBrains desktop tools. This means you can supercharge your development environment while helping the Kotlin community. Prizes are awarded at random among eligible participants, so every respondent has an equal chance to win. Be sure to provide a valid email address in the survey so we can contact you if you’re selected.
How do I take the survey?
Participating is simple. Click the “Take the survey” button on the survey landing page—you’ll be redirected to a short form that takes about 5–10 minutes to complete. All responses are anonymous and will be used solely for research and product improvement purposes. After finishing the survey, you’ll have the option to enter the prize drawing. The survey will remain open for a limited time, so we encourage you to act soon. Your voice will directly influence how Kotlin evolves alongside AI, ensuring that the tools you use every day become more intuitive and powerful.
Will there be any in-person events related to this survey?
Yes! If you are attending KotlinConf 2026, we invite you to stop by the registration counter after completing the survey. There, you can chat with our team face-to-face, share additional thoughts, and receive a small thank-you gift. This is a great opportunity to discuss your experiences in more detail and meet fellow Kotlin enthusiasts. Even if you can’t attend the conference, your online survey response remains equally valuable. We look forward to hearing from developers worldwide and hope to see many of you in person at KotlinConf 2026.
