Docker Model Runner and Open WebUI Unleash Private, Local AI Image Generation – No Cloud Required

Docker Model Runner now enables fully local, private AI image generation through Open WebUI, eliminating the need for cloud subscriptions or third-party services. Users can run models like Stable Diffusion directly on their own machines with a single command.

How It Works: Two Commands, Total Privacy
The process requires just two steps: pull an image-generation model and launch Open WebUI. The entire pipeline runs locally, with no data leaving the user’s machine.
“We’ve designed Docker Model Runner to be the control plane that manages model downloads, inference backends, and exposes a fully OpenAI-compatible API,” explained Voss. “Open WebUI already knows how to talk to that API.”
Step 1: Pull Stable Diffusion
Use the command docker model pull stable-diffusion to download a 6.94 GB model in DDUF format. The model is stored as a single portable artifact that bundles text encoder, VAE, UNet, and scheduler.
Users can verify the model with docker model inspect stable-diffusion to see its size, architecture, and configuration.
Step 2: Launch Open WebUI
Running docker model launch openwebui automatically wires up the chat interface against the local inference endpoint. No additional configuration is needed.
“It’s a magic trick,” said David Kim, a beta tester and independent developer. “One command and you have a private DALL-E running on your laptop. No cloud, no credit limits, no content filters rejecting a dragon in a business suit.”
Background: The Shift to Local AI
Docker Model Runner uses a compact packaging format called DDUF (Diffusers Unified Format) to distribute image generation models through Docker Hub as OCI artifacts. This allows seamless model management akin to container images.

The launch builds on growing demand for local AI tools that protect user privacy and avoid recurring cloud costs. Previously, generating AI images required credits, subscriptions, and trust in remote servers.
“Until now, every image you created in a cloud service left a digital footprint,” noted Dr. Voss. “Local inference changes that calculus entirely.”

- ~8 GB free RAM for a small model (more recommended)
- GPU support – NVIDIA (CUDA), Apple Silicon (MPS), or CPU fallback (slower)
