NASA's Problem-Solver: The Man Behind Artemis Launch Operations
Breaking News: Anton Kiriwas Critical to Artemis Moon Missions
Kennedy Space Center, FL – As NASA prepares to return humans to the Moon for the first time in over 50 years, one problem-solver stands at the center of launch operations. Anton Kiriwas, senior technical integration manager for NASA’s Exploration Ground Systems Program, ensures the Artemis spacecraft launches safely from the Kennedy Space Center.

Kiriwas occupies the integration console in Firing Room 1 of the Launch Control Center. From there, he bridges engineering teams and test management, reporting directly to the launch director with final technical recommendations on any issues during countdown.
“My official title is way too long – what I do is pretty simple: I solve problems for the ground systems,” Kiriwas said. “A big part of my job is to go solve all the problems that come.”
Read more about his journey to NASA or the significance of his role.
Background
Kiriwas’ path to NASA began with a job fair booth featuring an image of the Moon and Mars. While working at United Launch Alliance during the Space Shuttle Program, he saw that booth and it captured his imagination—though it felt like a distant dream.
He later joined NASA as a civil servant, designing electrical systems that led to his current position. As a senior launch project engineer, he coordinates across multiple disciplines to process, launch, and recover spacecraft.

What This Means
Kiriwas’ role is crucial for Artemis II and future crewed missions. He makes the final technical call on any issues during launch countdown, ensuring the safety of astronauts and success of the mission.
Despite the intensity, Kiriwas says launch day can feel easier because of rigorous simulations. His problem-solving expertise keeps the ground systems running smoothly, turning a once distant dream into a reality for humanity’s return to the Moon.
